Adrian lay in a chair in the officer's lounge, lean body sprawled casually. She was exhausted, and with her hair smoothed back from her face in an high ponytail, her cheekbones looked especially gaunt and the dark circles were quite prominent. Reaching up to her face, she ran her fingers over the fine baby hairs popping out in wavy tendrils around her face. She knew she wasn't at her best, but at this point, she didn't care much.
Her laptop lay on the table next to her, shut. She had been working on it, but she'd been hit by a wave of exhaustion and then had dozed off. Damn. Adrian had just woken up, and she rubbed her eyes, looking out to space and blinking rapidly to clear all vestiges of sleep from her eyes. A star glittered far off, and it reminded her of a song her mother had taught her when she was younger. Almost involuntarily, Adrian murmured it, voice hushed.
"Star light, star bright, I wish I may I wish I might Have the wish I wish tonight."
The barest hint of a smile quirked up one corner of her mouth as she remember the childish rhyme. Nevertheless, Adrian closed her eyes and made a wish, lid flickering shut for a second, a smile on her lips. Should she say it out loud? No, she decided, that would ruin it. With a broader grin playing on her mouth, she laughed softly at herself. She was 24, too old to be doing this, to be believing in childhood nonsense. Adrian looked up, eyes opening, to the star. Her eyes latched onto it, holding it there for a few seconds. Finally, she lapsed back into the chair, one leg bent over the other to form a surface for her computer. She reached for it and opened it, waking it.
